Hispanic culture has a long tradition providing the world with great literature. This should come as no surprise since more than 350 million people worldwide speak Spanish as their first language. Except for the country of Brazil, the entire continent of South America claims Spanish as the primary language. Hispanic culture reached far and wide throughout the world during the centuries of Western colonization of the new lands discovered after Columbus stumbled across the Americas. Plus, Hispanics are becoming the largest “minority” segment of the U.S. population.


Therefore, this market has become significantly important to book publishers worldwide and a significant number of Spanish children’s books, educational, short story collections as well as novels. Attempts toward capturing the many cultural elements that affect the lives of young Spanish-speaking readers has become a dominant trend with books revealing the contemporary realism faced by today’s Hispanic youth.

However, reading is probably more important for individual success in today’s world than it ever has been. Any child has a greater chance toward that success if reading skills are developed and used. Children are, and will always be, hungry for knowledge – like little sponges sopping up liquid. Although the need to read is paramount in any culture, it is decidedly important in areas like the U.S. where competition in life – for better education, jobs, housing and a way of life are factors that draw people from throughout the world seeking a piece of that American pie.

Therefore, when selecting a Spanish childrens book keep in mind it must foremost entertain to keep its young reader turning the next page.
