Looking For Spanish Childrens Books?
Hispanic culture has a long tradition providing the world with great literature. This should come as no surprise since more than 350 million people worldwide speak Spanish as their first language. Except for the country of Brazil, the entire continent of South America claims Spanish as the primary language. Hispanic culture reached far and wide throughout the world during the centuries of Western colonization of the new lands discovered after Columbus stumbled across the Americas. Plus, Hispanics are becoming the largest “minority” segment of the U.S. population.
Therefore, this market has become significantly important to book publishers worldwide and a significant number of Spanish children’s books, educational, short story collections as well as novels. Attempts toward capturing the many cultural elements that affect the lives of young Spanish-speaking readers has become a dominant trend with books revealing the contemporary realism faced by today’s Hispanic youth.
Although language binds all Spanish children’s books, authors from throughout the Hispanic world – Spain, Mexico, South and Central America, as well as the U.S. - pen a body of literature richly depicting the variety of life emanating from throughout worldwide Spanish culture.
Spanish childrens books, as are books written in other languages, can be divided into many categories including pre-school, juvenile and young adult. These books can be the stimulating baby books that help with early childhood development, school-aged educational offerings as well as fiction and non-fiction publications aimed to entertain and inform.
Many English translations of popular Spanish children’s books have found their way into U.S. school curriculums recognizing the importance needed to embrace traditional culture and values instead of denying and ignoring its importance.
And, like any culture with books written in any native language, Spanish children’s books must compete with the avalanche of modern entertainment including television, video and computer-based choices. It isn’t easy keeping a young reader of Spanish language engaged.
However, reading is probably more important for individual success in today’s world than it ever has been. Any child has a greater chance toward that success if reading skills are developed and used. Children are, and will always be, hungry for knowledge – like little sponges sopping up liquid. Although the need to read is paramount in any culture, it is decidedly important in areas like the U.S. where competition in life – for better education, jobs, housing and a way of life are factors that draw people from throughout the world seeking a piece of that American pie.
Therefore, when selecting a Spanish childrens book keep in mind it must foremost entertain to keep its young reader turning the next page.
A great number of award-winning Spanish children’s books are available including:
