Choose From A Selection Of Classic Childrens Books
There could be a debate considering what titles would make the list for classic children’s books. However, there are many, mostly published since 1960, that many childhood development experts would agree are worth the read. Experts seem to agree if a present-day book has been popular for at least the last 10 years it qualifies as a “classic.”
There are obvious criteria used to determine a classic children’s book worthy of the read. One that remains constant throughout time is popularity, usually translated through sales with editions published.
However, to parents and educators, popularity, although an important factor, is not the only criteria. Stories that provide the element commonly called “unforgetableness” may have greater weight determining a book’s classic status. This could be applied to characters, artwork, creative approaches or the pure enjoyment derived from a silly pun, twist of words or off-the-wall plot lines.
An important “classic” factor should be how well the book has survived passing down from one generation to the next. Therefore, although there does exist a plethora of excellent, recently-published children’s books, making any classic list must call for a test of time before any tome reaches the status of a classic children’s book.
Many classic childrens books carry similar themes of self-discovery, adventure, excitement displaying either story lines that are attractively exotic or near-to-home, recognizable and reinforcing.
Building your youngster’s classic children’s book library can begin with baby books that are soft but built with study materials to take all that usual baby abuse like attempts at chewing and strong-arm antics like trying to rip the book in half. These books use a lot of fun, rhyming-like words while employing bright and colorful imagery that catches the young eye. Books emitting sound, employing pop-up pages and other devices prove popular with older tots.
Some classic children’s book titles for babies and toddlers include:
* Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
* Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What D You See? by Bill Martin, Jr.
* Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt
* The baby’s catalogue by Janet Ahlberg and Allan Ahlberg
* Dr. Seuss’ ABC by Dr. Seuss
* Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss
* The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
* I See by Rachel Isadora
As your child matures, books where both story and art play important roles become favorite choices for your classic childrens book collection. Picture books have great appeal to pre-schoolers including these classics:
* The Snowman by Raymond Briggs
* Curious George by H. A. Rey
* The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper
* The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter
* Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina
Once a child starts reading independently, books take on a different look and feel, employing longer story lines with longer chapters that explore themes like good versus evil, friendship, loyalty and honor. Some classic children’s books to consider here are:
* Ramona the Pest by Beverly Clearly
* Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary
* The Moffats by Eleanor Estes
* The People Could Fly: American Black Folktales by Virginia Hamilton
* King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry
This selection of classic children’s books will lead your youngster through wonderful worlds of imagination and provide untold hours of entertaining joy.
