Childrens Literature Opens New Worlds To Kids
Getting children involved in reading from an early age should be the goal of every parent. Children's literature is a wonderful thing, full of excitement, adventure and lots of life lessons that can be learned at an early age. One of the keys to getting the best of children's literature is to focus on finding a variety of different books to read with your child.
There is a huge array of different types of children's literature. Some is not so much literature as stories made up about popular cartoon characters. This type of book might be good for getting the unenthusiastic child interested in reading a book, but might not be best as the main type of books you read with your kids. Be sure you also choose books from different genres, with different types of illustrations and story lines.
One reason it's so important to choose a wide variety of different books for your children to read from a young age is because you never know what they might fall in love with. If you always choose books with a fast paced story, full of action, you may never find out that a sentimental story about animals or a difficult time in a child's life can bring out the more sensitive side of your child, who just might fall in love with that type of book.
When choosing books for your child to read, it's important to choose some top quality books. A great way to do this is to take a look at book lists of either top children's books, popular titles or classic favorites. This way you will know what books have been valued by parents and children over the years, and are likely to find books that you child will be interested in.
For some parents, it's not a good idea to just assume that any childrens literature is obviously written for children, and therefore must be good enough for their child to read. Some parents are surprised and even shocked when they read a little in the book their ten year old daughter got from the library. Maybe it's about boy crazy girls, or talks about kissing. Maybe it's full of rude kids being disrespectful. There really are an unfortunate number of books on the shelves that just don't meet up to some parent's standards, and it's important that parents know what their kids are reading.
If you'd like your children to get a good variety of books to read, as well as having some outside encouragement (apart from school), you can enroll your them in children's book clubs. This is a fun way for kids to share their reading experiences with their peers, as well as to encourage them to read books that they might not pick out themselves.
Children's literature really does open new worlds to your kids. Just make sure it's not opening the wrong type of world, and you child will have happy memories of all the “worlds” they've been to over the years.
