Children's Book Publishing Not Always Easy On Authors

Children's literature is fascinating. Even adults can be sucked right into an adventure, even just through the illustrations of a good picture book, or the rhythm and rhyme of a board book for babies! Sometimes the stories are funny or silly, sometimes sad or moralistic, and sometimes they are very simple.

In fact, while reading some children's books, many people think, “I could write that! Anyone could write that!” But just what is it that gets a children's book published? What exactly are children's book publishers looking out for, and why do some books seem so much higher quality than others?

Children's book publishing is a huge industry. Many, many children's books come out every year, and there are a multitude of children's publishing companies that provide publishing services. However, all of these services are not created equal.

Most books that go through the big time, well known children's book publishers will be good quality books or at least have good, interesting illustrations. They generally target a larger market, and so must be very selective in what they will publish. This means that new children's book authors might not want to jump right in and try to be published with the top children's book publishers on their first go.

There are many other, smaller children's book publishers that offer their services to lesser known authors. Still, the competition is very stiff in the world of children's literature! This is due in large part to the previously mentioned feeling many people get, that anyone can write a children's book.

Of course some of the books that are published are not the best quality. They may have a strange story line, or the illustrations may be poor or mediocre quality. Still, there was something about the story, pictures or just the author, that intrigued the publisher enough to print the book. No publisher will print a book unless it will be financial viable for them.

Another option available is for a children's book author to self publish. They can pay to have their book printed, and then market and sell it on their own. This is a very difficult way to go about it, unless the author hopes to make a name for themselves and looks at it as an investment, in hopes of being picked up by a bigger publisher in the future. This type of publishing is very expensive, and requires the author to ship out their own books to those who order, presumably off their website.

For those hoping to publish children's books, there is plenty of good information and helpful tips for how to make your proposal stand out, and get your writing recognized and picked up by children's book publishers. It is especially wise to follow advice of authors who have been through the process on their own, or of publishers who deal with potential authors every day, and know what will catch their attention.
